Houston’s Simone Biles Wins Gymnastics All-Around Gold

Texan Simone Biles has won another gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Biles bested other competitors in the Women’s Individual All Around gymnastics competition. Biles is from Spring, Texas, which is within the Houston area.

The Texan beat her U.S. teammate Aly Raisman, and Aliya Mustafina from Russia to take the gold.

Biles has won two gold medals at the Olympic competition. She and her teammates won the gold in the Women’s Team All-Around competition.

As noted by CNN Sports, 19-year-old Biles was able to show skeptics that she could cope with the pressure and live up to the “hype” around her. They reported that “in Rio it was the hype which failed to keep up with Simone Biles.”

This was the young woman’s first Olympic competition.

She scored 15.933 and became the first female in 20 years to “win back-to-back world and Olympic all around titles,” CNN reported. They noted that she is a three-time world champion in the all around women’s competition, and a four-time U.S. all around champion. She has won more world medals than any other female gymnast from the U.S. – 14- 10 gold, two silver, and two bronze medals.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott tweeted his support of Biles.

The three-time World AA Champion and 14-time World Medalist with the Mary Lou Retton smile has 294,000 followers on Twitter. She can be followed @Simone_Biles.

Biles has four more gymnastics events remaining during this Olympic competition — the Women’s uneven bars, beam, vault, and the Women’s floor exercise.

After she won the gold on Thursday, she tweeted “can’t thank everyone enough for all the endless love and support. I love you. [Heart] XOXO”

The world-acclaimed gymnast trains at the Bela Karolyi Ranch in New Waverly, Texas, 45 minutes from her home. Aimee Boorman has been her coach since she was seven years old. Bela Karolyi has been the coach of several Olympic and World Champions, including Houstonian “American’s Sweetheart,” Mary Lou Retton.
