Officials at the University of Illinois shot down a proposal which would have transformed the grounds into a “sanctuary campus”, harboring illegal immigrant students and banning federal immigration officials.

University President Timothy Killeen and Executive Vice President Barb Wilson told faculty and students in a statement that the university would not seek efforts to implement sanctuary campus policies, citing that they would follow state and federal law on the immigration issue, according to WAND-TV.

Killeen and Wilson also stated that such sanctuary campus policies are unclear and vague.

President-Elect Donald Trump has vowed to build a wall on the southern border, enforce E-verify, deport criminal illegal immigrants and defund sanctuary cities which shield illegals from federal immigration law.

While Trump’s strict immigration efforts remain popular with the American electorate, left-leaning universities and colleges have stepped in to craft sanctuary campus policies in response.

Vanderbilt University students are demanding a campus policy where illegal immigrants would be shielded and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) would be banned from campus, as Breitbart Texas reported.
