Border Patrol agents assigned to the Yuma Sector arrested a previously deported Mexican national after he reportedly brandished a knife and made threats against an agent. The agent used his sidearm to control and defuse the situation.

Agents assigned to patrol the Colorado River in southwest Arizona encountered a man pretending to be part of a work crew on May 4. As agents questioned the man, he became combative and pulled out a knife, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials.

Feeling threatened, the agent pulled his service weapon and ordered the man to drop the knife. The man eventually did so and attempted to flee.

The agents engaged in a foot pursuit and caught the man. After making the arrest, the agents learned the man is a Mexican national. Agents backtracked the man’s footprints and determined he had illegally crossed the border earlier that day.

It was not his first time to illegally cross the Mexican border into the U.S. During a records investigation, the agents learned the man has both a criminal and an immigration history. The Mexican national received a 3.5 year prison sentence after being convicted for two counts of auto theft. The thefts of the vehicles occurred in 2012 and 2013, officials stated. He is currently on supervised release. Immigration officers deported the Mexican national after the Arizona prison system released him from custody.

He now faces new federal charges of illegal re-entry after removal.

Illegal immigrants assaulted Border Patrol agents more than 300 times through the first six months of FY 2018, Breitbart Texas reported. A new report detailing the number of assaults in April is expected to be released by CBP officials within the next week.
