JERUSALEM — The five-day ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinians that began on Wednesday night has been extended an additional 24 hours to give both sides extra time to finalize a long-term deal to end the conflict, according to Israeli and Palestinian officials.
The outline of a long-term deal was first reported by the al-Jazeera television network on Monday night.
According to the report, the deal would include the opening of border crossings between Israel and Gaza, the expansion of the Gaza Strip’s fishing zone to 12 nautical miles, and a one month delay on discussions regarding the construction of a seaport in Gaza and the release of Palestinian prisoners captured in the West Bank.
The Palestinian delegation has reportedly accepted the proposal.
“At the moment, we’re waiting for the Israeli cabinet to announce that they accept the agreement,” a Palestinian delegation member in Cairo told Ynet News.
Israel has not yet issued a statement on the proposal. The new 24-hour ceasefire will expire at midnight on Tuesday.
