A cleaning crew found a dead fetus in the bathroom of an American Airlines flight stationed at LaGuardia Airport on Tuesday, according to a report.

The crew made the gruesome discovery in the plane’s bathroom early Tuesday morning aboard American Airlines Flight 1942, which was out of service at the time, the New York Post reported.

A high-ranking police source told the Post the American Airlines flight arrived from Charlotte, North Carolina, on Monday night and disembarked at Terminal B. The source said the fetus appeared to be between three to six months old.

The New York City medical examiner is currently investigating to determine the cause of death and will perform an autopsy, NBC New York reported.

“The OCME can confirm we’re investigating what we believe to be a human fetus found deceased on an airplane,” the New York City medical examiner’s office said. “We will release determination when investigation is complete.”

LaGuardia Airport tweeted Tuesday morning that the airport had been experiencing delays due to the out-of-service aircraft:

A spokesperson for American Airlines said the airline is “actively cooperating with law enforcement” as authorities look into the incident. The Queens District Attorney’s Office is also investigating the incident.
