A Nebraska judge set a $2 million bond for a fugitive illegal alien charged in a hit-and-run DUI homicide case. The DUI is allegedly the fourth for the illegal alien ordered deported in 2012.
Orline Carrasco-Zelaya, also known as Edwin Elvir-Palma, was charged with felony counts of motor vehicle homicide, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident resulting in a death and DUI third offense aggravated. The 27-year-old Honduran native is listed as a fugitive illegal alien after being ordered deported in 2012, according to KMTV CBS3.
While the local judge set a $2 million bond for Carrasco-Zelaya, it is not likely he will see freedom as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has placed an immigration detainer on the fugitive illegal alien.
Margariot Nava-Luna, 34, had been out drinking with the Honduran man who had previously entered the U.S. illegally. The two men were seen playing pool at a bar around 2 a.m. on the morning of April 16. They were also seen on a video security system leaving the bar with Nava-Luna in the passenger seat.
The news outlet reported that investigators claimed that Carrasco-Zelaya was driving and crossed the center line of the roadway striking and killing Nava-Luna. Police initially reported the deceased man had been walking at the time of the crash.
Nava-Luna’s stepson told the CBS affiliate, ““It was not a mistake, he was going for it, he didn’t even brake, he didn’t even stop.”
Officials later updated the information to state that Carrasco-Zelaya was dropping Nava-Luna off when he struck and killed the man with the rear of his vehicle the Omaha World-Herald reported.
“He was dropping (Nava-Luna) off and hit him with his vehicle,” Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine told Omaha World-Herald reporter Kevin Cole . “I’m not sure if (Nava-Luna) got out of the car and (Carrasco-Zelaya) hit him, or when that occurred.”
Shortly before the incident, a 911 caller reported a possible intoxicated driver in a gray SUV. Another motorist flagged down a sheriff’s deputy and informed him of the possible drunk driver.
About fifteen minutes later, a Douglas County deputy sheriff saw the SUV and initiated a traffic stop. He arrested Carrasco-Zelaya who appeared to be intoxicated and had no driver license. A breath test would later reveal a .239 level of intoxication, the news outlets reported.
Breitbart News’ Warner Todd Huston reported this is not the first death of a Omaha resident at the hands of a Honduran immigrant. In February, 21-year-old Sarah Root was killed by an alleged drunk-driving illegal immigrant from Honduras who was reported to be street-racing. A judge in that case let the accused, 19-year-old Eswin Mejia, out of jail on a small bond. In this case, ICE did not place a detainer on the Honduran who has since disappeared.
Last week, the mother of Sarah Root, Michelle Root, testified before a U.S. House Immigration and Border Security Subcommittee, Breitbart’s Caroline May reported. Root told the representatives, “He posted $5,000 bond, which was less than the cost it was to bury my daughter Sarah. Because of the lack of controls, the police, immigration, U.S. Marshals and law enforcement have little or no information on his whereabouts.”
Mejia has been added to the FBI’s most wanted list but it is believed he may have fled the country.
Earlier this month, a street-racing incident in Houston, Texas, resulted in the hit-and-run death of a local pastor and his wife at the hands of a Mexican illegal alien, Breitbart Texas reported. The alleged driver, Alexis De Larosa Sosa, 21, waited three days before turning himself in to Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies.
The pastor and his wife were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash and De Larosa Sosa reportedly fled the scene on foot. ICE officials were expected to place an immigration detainer on the suspect.
