CIUDAD VICTORIA, Tamaulipas– The government of the border state of Tamaulipas filed a formal complaint with Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office against Federal Police officers for their roles in a possible act of corruption after they allegedly helped a convoy of tractor trailers run a police checkpoint.

The case took place this week on the highway that connects the border city of Matamoros with the state capital Ciudad Victoria. According to the accusations raised by the Tamaulipas Government Finance Office, the federal officers blocked their state counterparts from stopping and checking six tractor-trailers traveling south from Matamoros.

The state police officers were manning a checkpoint known as the “Y” along the highway that connects Ciudad Victoria and Matamoros near San Fernando. The Government of Tamaulipas points out in its complaint that the state cops spotted six tractor-trailers moving in a suspicious manner and accelerated to run the checkpoint.

The state police officers and agents with the Tamaulipas Finance Office chased the tractor trailers, however, two Federal Police officers blocked them off and tried to stop them under “non-existent” arguments. The tactic gave the drivers of the six trucks an opportunity to escape without being inspected.

The alleged actions sparked suspicion by the Tamaulipas government for collusion between organized crime and federal officers.

In the complaint, the Tamaulipas Government claims it has an agreement with Mexico’s Tax Administration System (SAT) where they are able to carry out vehicle inspections in matters of foreign trade.

In addition to the complaint, the Tamaulipas government also reported the incident to Mexico’s National Security Commission whose leader, Alfonso Navarrete Prida, ordered that the coordinator for the Federal Police in Tamaulipas and the officer who headed the agency in San Fernando be moved to Mexico City for further investigation. Navarrete Prida also gave instructions for the internal affairs unit of the Federal Police to probe the matter.

In the complaint, the Tamaulipas government requests an investigation into the case to uncover any networks of corrupt officers colluding with organized crime.
