The local government of Mexico City is implementing a public face mask rule as the number of Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases continues to rise.
On Sunday evening, Mexico City Governor Claudia Sheinbaum announced the measure as a way to slow the spread of the virus. She shared a video on how to make a covering out of pieces of clothing.
Sheinbaum’s message comes as Mexico City remains the national epicenter. The most recent set of figures show 14,677 confirmed cases and 1,351 fatalities.
Out of the confirmed cases, Mexico City has 3,966, while the neighboring Mexico State has 2,355. Similarly, out of the 1,351 fatalities nationwide, 309 were in Mexico City. In previous weeks, health officials asked the public to stay indoors through a series of promotional campaigns. Soon after, the federal government ordered a shutdown of nonessential businesses and activities. Despite the measures, Mexico City had not made facial covers mandatory. Federal health undersecretary Lopez Gatell even spoke out against them saying they did little to protect the public.
The figures released by federal health officials each night are only a fraction of the cases they estimate to exist. Mexico Undersecretary of Health Hugo Lopez Gatell last week, without explanation, stopped providing estimates. In previous estimates, Lopez Gatell said he multiplied confirmed cases by eight (8). The latest estimate from April 16 suggested 55,950 cases.
