San Diego County Gun Owners is challenging gun show protesters to prove claims that laws are violated at gun shows and offering to donate $10,000 in the name of any protester who can do it.
The move comes as gun show protesters seek to shut down the Crossroads of the West gun show at Del Mar Fairgrounds.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that San Diego County Gun Owners will “donate $10,000 to a favorite charity of anyone who can prove someone at the shows has violated state laws requiring background checks, a 10-day waiting period or prohibiting the sale of automatic weapons.”
Gun show protester Rose Ann Sharp cried foul over the offer from San Diego County Gun Owners, saying, “We believe that (Gun Owners Executive Director Michael) Schwartz’s $10,000 challenge is a disingenuous, fundraising scam. Schwartz knows that none of the allegations he claims to refute was ever made and therefore no reward will ever be won. Instead, like the NRA, he is trying to incite his membership to donate out of fear and anger to this faux challenge.”
The problem for Sharp is that her organization–NeverAgainCa–made arguments earlier this year containing claims very similar to those Schwartz mentioned. And Breitbart News reported that they made these claims in reference of the Crossroads of the West gun show at Del Mar.
On April 22, 2018, the San Diego Union-Tribune published a photo depicting fewer than two dozen gun show protesters holding signs that said, “After Parkland, Shame On You.” Nevermind that the Parkland attack had zero to do with gun shows, much less the Crossroads of the West gun show.
Sharp said, “Our point is to end the gun shows. The gun shows are just not healthy for our community.”
And the Union-Tribune reported that “Sharp and other Never Again members say shows like the one at Del Mar promote the gun culture and provide easy access to assault-style rifles and weapons of all types.”
In truth, California has universal background checks, which means gun sales of any kind must go through a background check–whether the sales are retail, neighbor to neighbor, or at a gun show. Moreover, a 10-day waiting period is required for all sales, even at a gun show. So gun shows are not providing the “easy access” claimed.
