Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson stated that he hopes there isn’t a war on police or a general anti-police sentiment but the number of police killed is “really unfortunate. And I hope we turn that tide” in an interview broadcast on Wednesday’s “On the Record with Greta Van Susteren” on the Fox News Channel.
Johnson stated [relevant remarks being around 4:30] that he has taken on the practice of writing letters to police chiefs of every department that loses an officer, and that as a result the “I’m writing a lot of letters” and that he’s much more “cognizant” of “how many of our law enforcement personnel are killed in the line of duty, on a regular basis, and it’s really unfortunate. And I hope we turn that tide.”
When asked about the perception that there’s a “war on police” and whether there’s “sort of a general, anti-police [mentality] among some?” Johnson answered, “Well, I sure hope not.” He added that “So many places I’ve been, the community is appreciative of the good work the police do, on a daily basis. I happen to believe that is the prevailing sentiment in our country, and I believe that’s — it’s going to continue.”
