Clay Aiken Winning Congressional Primary Race by Less than 400 Votes

American Idol’s most famous runner up is in first place–for now.

Clay Aiken’s bid to face off with two-term Republican Rep. Renee Ellmers of North Carolina could be successful should his current vote total hold.

Tuesday’s primary election between the singer and Keith Crisco ended with Aiken leading by less than 400 votes.

At 11:30 p.m., Aiken took to the stage to thank his supporters and say he was confident that he would be in the race in November. Crisco said earlier in the evening that the race was too close to call and didn’t comment further.

Aiken is a political neophyte although his background includes work with both UNICEF and special education issues. He promised during his campaign to light a bipartisan spark, one that fellow Democrat Barack Obama failed to do during his time in the Oval Office, he says.
