Box Office Predictions: 'Guardians Of The Galaxy' Soars, 'America' Beats Michael Moore

Get ready for August’s biggest opener ever.

Sensei’s weekend predictions and revenue results are as follows:

1. Guardians of the Galaxy ($85 Million)– Reviews are strong, and Marvel has a golden opportunity here to lead the box office frame. Sensei doesn’t see any reason this can’t reach a Thor: The Dark World-like opening. Film will easily set the record for August’s biggest opener.

2. Lucy ($19 Million)As predicted, this film became Summer’s biggest sleeper hit. Film even managed to way outperform Sensei’s call last week (a very impressive kind of rarity). Audience buzz is low, however, which could hurt it in coming weeks.

3. Hercules ($15 Million) Film had a respectable opening last weekend, and does have more positive audience buzz than Lucy. Still, no worries here on the domestic figures as this film will easily perform better internationally.

4. Get On Up ($14 Million)– A James Brown bio-pic is a great idea for a project, but it faces very stiff competition. A respectable “mid level” opening looks set here.

5. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes ($8 million) – Film easily passed Tim Burton’s 2001 Planet of the Apes remake this week. This franchise entry continues to build solid ground toward a $200 million domestic finish.

In other calls:

America looks to pass Michael Moore’s Capitalism: A Love Story this weekend, impressive for a film that is already the highest grossing documentary of 2014.

Look for A Most Wanted Man to open around the $4 million mark.

That’s Sensei’s take. Have a great weekend.
