Jim Carrey’s now deceased former girlfriend, Cathriona White, was involved with the Church of Scientology, and was taking classes at the group’s Hollywood Celebrity Centre, according to blogger Tony Ortega.

White, an industry makeup artist, was found dead of a suspected suicide Monday night inside her Sherman Oaks, CA home by two friends who had stopped by to check on her. The friends called police, who found the woman lifeless, alongside a suicide note that had Carrey’s name written in it.

The 30-year-old Irish native had been involved with 53-year-old Carrey off and on since 2012, but the pair had broken up on Sept. 24.

Scientology critic Tony Ortega, who appeared in Alex Gibney’s HBO documentary Going Clear earlier this year, and writes a Scientology blog, reported Wednesday two of White’s friends said she was in the process of taking Scientology classes in Los Angeles.

Ortega’s sources, who are described as two friends, reportedly said at the time of her death, White was working to complete her Scientology “objectives” while taking the “Survival Rundown,” which is a course where members of the group are asked to complete tasks while being quizzed by another member of the group, The Daily Mirror reports.

“Her friends tell us Cathriona got involved in Scientology four to five years ago through members of Beck’s circle of friends,” writes Ortega. “They encouraged her to move to the US from Ireland and take Scientology courses.”

Ortega adds Cathriona’s friends noted they were worried about her becoming romantically involved with Carrey again this year, but they were calmed by Scientologists, who said she was emotionally prepared to again handle dating the actor, as “She had just finished the Purif and was doing her objectives.”

Ortega did not disclose if the friends he received the information from are the same people who found White’s body on Monday.

“Purif” is short for the “Purification Rundown,” which Ortega describes as “a process invented by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard that he claimed could ‘detoxify’ the body through an intense regimen of daily sauna sessions and massive doses of the vitamin niacin.”

Following the news of Cathriona’s death, Carrey released a statement Tuesday:

“She was a truly kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for the soil, to whom loving and being loved was all that sparkled,” he wrote. “My heart goes out to her family and friends and to everyone who loved and cared about her. We have all been hit with a lightning bolt.”

A person described as a neighbor of White’s told The Sun after her death she appeared paranoid and depressed in the days before her suspected suicide.

“She wasn’t smiling. She seemed paranoid – she’d also installed security cameras all over the property in the last couple of months,” said the neighbor.

“She was very private and had only lived in the house a few months. I’d heard Carrey was her boyfriend but never saw him there,” said another neighbor.

Photos of Carrey smiling and socializing at a party in Hollywood on Sept. 24, the night he is said to have broken up with White, surfaced Wednesday.

The comedian was reportedly spotted socializing with a number of women at the party.
