Grammy-Winning Duo Gnarls Barkley Reunion Plans Derailed by Trump Victory

Musician and producer Danger Mouse — one-half of the Grammy-winning duo Gnarls Barkley — has revealed that a scheduled reunion between himself and bandmate Cee-Lo Green never happened due to Donald Trump’s victory in the 2016 presidential election.

In an interview Monday with Apple’s Beats 1 radio host Zane Lowe, Danger Mouse — real name Brian Joseph Burton — was asked whether Gnarls Barkley fans could expect new music from the group, which last released an album in 2008.

“The last time we saw each other was the day before the election in Los Angeles,” Danger Mouse said of himself and Green, who scored a massive hit with their 2006 single, “Crazy.”

“We were supposed to meet the next day and I was like, ‘this thing will be over with by 7 o’clock West Coast time. I’ll see you around 8 or 9 or something,'” he added.

The producer said, however, that the planned meeting between himself and Green never happened, apparently because he was too distressed by Trump’s victory to make it.

“I was drinking heavily on a couch by myself staring at the TV at that time. I don’t even know where he was,” Danger Mouse said.

Gnarls Barkley isn’t the only music group whose plans changed after Trump’s election victory; earlier this year, Irish rock band U2 decided to delay the release of its latest studio album.

Songs of Experience, the band’s follow-up to its platinum-selling 2014 album Songs of Innocence, was “pretty much complete,” U2 founding guitarist The Edge told Rolling Stone in January. But then Trump won the election and “suddenly the world changed,” he added.

“We just went, ‘Hold on a second – we’ve got to give ourselves a moment to think about this record and about how it relates to what’s going on in the world,'” The Edge said, adding that Trump’s election was “like a pendulum has suddenly just taken a huge swing in the other direction.”
