On June 23, Sacramento Flag Works ceased sales of the the Confederate flag because Dylann Roof allegedly shot and killed nine people at Charleston, South Carolina’s Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church last Wednesday.
Store employee Jim Zellars said, “It’s just a real sensitive thing right now, you know, just don’t pour gasoline on the fire.”
According to KCRA 3, Sacramento Flag Works sells “hundreds of colorful flags, representing every corner of the earth, and countless organizations,” but the Confederate battle flag will no longer be one of them.
By taking the flag off the shelves, Sacramento Flag Works joins Amazon, eBay, Sears, Walmart, and others, all of which have stopped selling items containing the Confederate Flag logo as well.
A Walmart spokesperson suggested that items with a Confederate flag on them only made it into the store incidentally to begin with, saying: “We never want to offend anyone with the products that we offer … Still, at times, items make their way into our assortment improperly – this is one of those instances.”
Following the June 17 Charleston attack, President Obama, Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush, Governor Nikki Haley (R), and Senators Tim Scott (R-SC) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) called for the Confederate flag to be removed from the South Carolina Capitol grounds. On June 23 this call was expanded by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) who asked that a statue of Jefferson Davis be removed from the rotunda of the Kentucky Capitol.
McConnell’s calls were echoed by Kentucky GOP Gubernatorial candidate Matt Bevin.
The statue of Jefferson Davis has been in the Kentucky Capitol since 1936.
