Fo Shizzle: Snoop Dogg’s Son Quits UCLA Football

Another rapper’s son on UCLA’s football team made news this week, as Cordell Broadus, the son of Snoop Dogg, never reported for the team’s camp.

The news strikes on a day when the cross-town USC Trojans enjoyed a screening of Straight Outta Compton on its off day and nearly two months from when another famous rapper allegedly partook in a violent encounter with a UCLA coach over treatment toward his son.

The San Bernardino camp started Monday, but the six-foot-two, 200-pound wide receiver did not communicate with the team, according to sources. Some people close to Broadus stated that the incoming four-star freshman rebelled against his father, who wanted him to play football. ESPN profiled Broadus and Snoop Dogg in a documentary, Snoop & Son: A Dad’s Dream, about the UCLA recruitment.

Snoop Dogg said to his son, “Your greatness is gonna have to be to the third power if you want to get out of my shadow.”

UCLA football coach Jim Mora released a statement, saying, “Cordell informed me yesterday that he has decided to pursue other passions in his life – in particular his love of film through his company Film School Productions. Cordell is an amazing young man with many talents, and we wish him nothing but the best as he continues to pursue his degree at UCLA.”

Broadus leaving the team will not affect his status as a student at the university, where he already attended the summer session. His status in the Broadus household remains another matter.

The Bruins looked poised to field a tandem of rap-mogul dauphins this seaon. In June, Los Angeles cops arrested rapper P. Diddy, the father of UCLA sophomore defensive back Justin Combs, for assault after allegedly threatening UCLA strength and conditioning coach Sal Alosi with a kettlebell. The Los Angeles district attorney’s office later dropped the charges. Combs is attending the camp; his father recently posted a photo on Instagram, according to The Los Angeles Times, of his son at the training camp, captioned “Go Bruins!”
