During the November 20 airing of Real Time With Bill Maher, California Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom (D) countered Donald Trump’s defense of an armed citizenry by suggesting armed citizens would have only made things worse during the recent Paris terror attacks.
Breitbart News previously reported that Trump responded to the attacks by saying, “If [the French people] had guns, if our people had guns, it would have been a much, much different situation.”
But when Maher mentioned Trump’s comments on Friday night, Newsom responded by saying, “I just simply, this sort of mythology, the guy with the gun that’s going to come save the day, I mean, so right out of the movies, sort of this gun-slinging fantasy. The reality is, it’s most likely to create more harm, more damage, more lost lives in those circumstances.”
According to MRC/Newsbusters, Maher responded by asking Newsom if he was really saying he’d prefer not being armed over being armed, and Newsom answered by pointing to all the chaos he believes citizens would cause by having guns. He said, “Well, I would hope that folks sitting next to me that haven’t been trained, that don’t necessarily, don’t respond well under stressful circumstances, don’t get up and then start pointing the trigger or pointing a gun and shooting.”
Think about it: 130 people were killed and hundreds more were wounded in Paris in a scenario where the people were unarmed but the terrorists were well-armed. In effect, the people were sitting ducks. And instead of addressing this unnatural state of defenseless–which we are reminded of every time an evil person opens fire in a gun free zone in the United States–Newsom worries that armed citizens would only made things worse.
Maher picked up on this line of thought in Newsom’s statements and said, “But hasn’t the worst thing already happened? A crazed madman who’s bent on killing everyone? How could it get worse?”
