Vienna Building 'Explosion' Leaves Several Injured, Cause Yet Unknown

Reports suggest that several people have been injured, and more may be trapped after a four-story building in Vienna collapsed following an explosion.

It is not yet known what caused the explosion and subsequent collapse of the building in Austria’s capital.

A statement from local firefighters said:

“There was an explosion of as yet unknown causes”

“A parked car in the street is partially buried under bricks and debris.”

The Independent reports that a video from the scene “shows huge clouds of grey smoke filling the street as people rush out of their houses away from the explosion.”

The Daily Express notes that Mariahilfer Strasse is a main shopping thoroughfare that is busy on a Saturday morning.

“It is close to the historic Schönbrunn Palace, the home to French Queen Marie Antoinette’s family and summer residence of the Hapsburgs.”
