Baltimore Prosecutor Marilyn Mosby Won First Case on ‘Judge Judy’

Marilyn Mosby, 35, the Baltimore City State’s Attorney who has filed charges against six policemen in the death of Freddie Gray, won her first case when she appeared on the show “Judge Judy” in 2000.

Mosby, then Marilyn James, a student at Tuskegee University in Alabama, told Judge Judith Sheindlin that her neighbor, Ryan Johnson, 27, had invaded her four-bedroom apartment and trashed it while she was gone over the summer break.

Johnson protested that someone had broken into Mosby’s apartment and he had no idea how the apartment had been damaged, but Mosby brought pictures showing “baby decorations” and “evidence of a baby shower” inside her locked bedroom–while noting that Johnson’s wife was pregnant.

She said Johnson had told her while she was away that the landlord had made him the building manager and it would be in her best interests for her to allow him to use her kitchen, because, during the school year, he wanted to open a restaurant.

Judge Judy asked Johnson, “You think a burglar would make a baby shower?” She later awarded Mosby $1,731.90 in damages, telling her that she was “going to get every cent you’re suing for” and informing Johnson, “Mr. Johnson, what you did to this young woman was wrong. You figured she is a college student, she has no way of fighting back, she has nothing else to do… You took advantage of her.”

Judge Judy told the court, “He knew what he was doing was wrong and illegal and I think he didn’t care.”

After the decision had been rendered, Mosby said she had attempted to get local police and the local district attorney to help her but got no satisfaction, adding, “Finally, Judge Judy, she finally gave me justice.” Mosby, a native of boston who later attended Boston College law school, may still harbor bitter feelings against police; on May 6 she “liked” a tweet calling the Baltimore police whom she has charged “thugs.”
