Amtrak Police Arrest Man for Hiding Cameras in Bathroom

Amtrak police arrested a man suspected of hiding cameras in the men’s room at a train station in Providence, officials report.

Police caught Jose Torres, 51, attempting to place the cameras. He is now facing charges of video voyeurism.

The cameras were expertly disguised as electrical outlets and light sensors, but Torres was seen on Amtrak’s own surveillance setting his invasive cameras in place.

The national train line reported that a station janitor discovered the disguised cameras and then saw Torres hanging around near the bathroom carrying a variety of electronic gear. The janitor alerted police. After Torres was detained for questioning, police discovered videos of the bathrooms on his laptop and phone.

Amtrak officials have said they turned the case over to the Providence police department, but that agency has made no public statements on the case.

There have been other recent sexual crimes committed at Amtrak stations. At the end of February a man was arrested at an Amtrak station for sexually assaulting and robbing a female passenger in Rutland, Vermont. In another case, an Amtrak employee was arrested and accused of sexual assault aboard a train passing through Roosevelt County, Montana.
