Police: Oregon Woman Drives SUV Into Supermarket to Protest Bounced Check
Springfield Police Department

An Oregon woman allegedly drove her SUV into a supermarket just after midnight in protest of a cashier’s decision to decline her purchase because of a bounced check.

Police arrested Noella Yvonne Fay, 43, and charged her with “six counts of reckless endangering, hit and run, reckless driving and first-degree criminal mischief,” The Register-Guard reports.

Fay attempted to buy $2,200 worth of gift cards from a local Safeway at around 4 p.m. Tuesday, but her check bounced and a cashier refused her the sale as a result, police say.

At 12:33 a.m. the next morning, Fay allegedly drove back to the Safeway and parked in front of the store’s entrance, blocking the way for shoppers to go in and out.

Police say she was yelling to staff about wanting her gift cards.

A Safeway employee told Fay she needed to move her car before they would discuss the gift card issue.

In response, The Register-Guard reports, Fay drove her Chevrolet Tahoe through the entrance, down an aisle to the back of the store, backed up to the front of the aisle, drove toward the deli, and drove through the exit into the parking lot.

Police later found the abandoned SUV before they arrested Fay.

Four employees and two customers were in the store when the accident happened, but no injuries were reported.
