Gabby Giffords’ Gun Control Group Pushes Bullet-Proof Posters in Lieu of Universal Background Checks

Gabby Giffords is still campaigning for every would-be gun owner to pass the same background check her attacker passed for his gun.

And until such a time as those background checks are universal, Giffords’ gun control group–Americans for Responsible Solutions–is putting “bullet-proof posters” up on busy streets so people can hide behind them if someone randomly begins to shoot.

The posters appear to be made of bullet-proof drywall, which contains a Kevlar weave that will stop many–but not all–rounds from penetrating. The special drywall is a popular component in the construction of safe-rooms around the country.

Giffords’ ARS uses poster-sized pieces of the material, emblazoned with the words, “This post stops bullets because our gun laws can’t.” Other versions of the poster say, “In case of gunfire hide behind this poster.”

They put out a video promoting the posters, and in one part of the video a man looks at the camera and says, “Criminals have illegal guns, and they are getting these guns from somewhere. These kids are 14, 15-years-old, so how are they getting these high-powered rifles?”

The quick answer for the man who asked how  14- and 15-year-olds are acquiring weapons is that they do so via thievery or gang connections. Both of these means of acquisition will always thwart gun control, and Baltimore stands as proof.

For example, Baltimore banned “assault weapons” and “high capacity” magazines in 2013, and they also required would-be handgun purchasers to submit fingerprints to state police for a database. The result? The use of “high capacity” magazines in crime rose in 2014, 2015, and 2016. Moreover, Baltimore hit its highest murder rate on record–344–in 2015. It hit its second highest–318–in 2016.

The murder rate is so out control that Mayor Catherine Pugh (D) is now asking the FBI to step in and take over.

The video ends by saying, “It’s time to require background checks on all gun sales.” This claim ignores the fact that Gabby Giffords’ attacker passed a background check for his gun, as did the Aurora movie theater attacker, both Fort Hood attackers, the Virginia Tech attacker, the Lafayette theater attacker, Alison Parker’s on-air attacker, the New York City bomber, the Orlando Pulse attacker, the Umpqua Community College attacker, and the DC Navy Yard attacker, among many others.
