A home invasion suspect allegedly targeted his third home in Richmond, California, Friday night and was shot “a few times” by the homeowner.

NBC Bay Area reports the 47-year-old suspect allegedly entered the home through a window shortly after midnight. The homeowner responded by shooting the suspect “a few times.”

The suspect was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

KTVU quoted Richmond Police Department Sgt. Lynette Parker saying, “The family had no other way to protect itself other than self defense.”

Police indicate the suspect “did have prior run-ins on suspicion of home invasions.” Authorities did not say whether he was armed when he allegedly entered the Richmond home.

On July 6, the very day the homeowner used a gun to stop the alleged invader, Gabby Giffords’ gun control group tweeted that self-defensive gun usage is a “myth.”
