Mass Resignations, Protests in Tunisia Against Saied Dictatorship

One-hundred-thirteen senior officials from Tunisia’s opposition Ennahda party resigned on Saturday, protesting President Kais Saied’s increasingly dictatorial rule and their own party leadership’s poor response to it. Thousands of demonstrators rallied in the capital of Tunis on Sunday to demand Saied’s resignation.

Chinese State Media: World Rejects ‘American Values’ Like Freedom and Democracy

China’s state-run Global Times cited a few polls and Western op-ed pieces on Sunday to argue the world has rejected “American values” like freedom and democracy. In the Chinese Communist paper’s view, the U.S. response to China’s coronavirus pandemic, unrest in the streets, and “division and confrontation between political parties” prove the U.S. system doesn’t work and America’s “global leadership is declining.”

The referendum to approve constitutional amendments that extended Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi’s term, granted permission for him to run for another six years in 2024, and increased the powers of his office has passed with over 88% of votes cast in favor, according to the Egyptian election commission.

Australia’s parliament on Wednesday passed a strict new social media law that could fine tech companies, or even jail their executives, if they allow violent material to be posted on their sites or fail to remove it quickly enough after complaints are filed. China’s Anti-Corruption Agency to Crack Down on ‘Political Deviation’

Chinese President Xi Jinping has long been accused of using his seven-year “anti-corruption” crusade as an excuse to purge officials who are rivals to his power or critics of his ideology. This critique will find new energy thanks to Tuesday’s announcement that China’s chief corruption-fighting agency will also begin targeting “political deviation” as well as graft.
