Turkish TV Station Fined for Joke About Allah’s Butt

“Don’t point with your finger. God is everywhere, and with your finger you could be poking Him in His butt.” This dialogue from the Turkish version of the French television comedy Ah Biz Kadınlar (“Ah We Women”) just garnered its television station a fine from the Turkish state– not for its reference to an unsavory body part in a religious context, but for the use of the Turkish word for “God” rather than “Allah.”

Former Miss Turkey Arrested for Insulting President Erdogan

Turkish authorities have arrested former Miss Turkey, Merve Buyuksarac, 26, because she quoted a poem on social media that insults President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The arrest is the latest in a crackdown on free speech in Turkey that has worsened since two radical Islamists slaughtered twelve people at satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo in Paris, France.

After vowing that his nation would not submit to terrorist demands, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has asked several prominent Middle Eastern leaders for help, including Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

Armenians Decry Erdogan’s Gallipoli Celebration as a “Provocation”

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has invited world leaders, including Armenian President Serzh Sarkysian, to participate in festivities to be held in Turkey to celebrate the anniversary of the Battle of Gallipoli on April 24. Coincidentally, that is the very day when Armenians are preparing to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, perpetrated by the Ottoman Turks.
