Professor Bruce Gilley of Portland State University asked Third World Quarterly to retract his article on colonialism after backlash from scholars in his field.
“I have asked the Third World Quarterly to withdraw my article ‘The Case for Colonialism,'” Gilley wrote in a post on his faculty page. “I regret the pain and anger that it has caused for many people. I hope that this action will allow a more civil and caring discussion on this important issue to take place.”
The article was published in Third World Quarterly, a journal which focuses on the development of third world countries. A petition, which garnered over 10,000 signatures, demanded that the journal retract the entry, claiming that it serves to justify the “brutalizing” of “those who have suffered under colonialism.”
Leftist scholar Noam Chomsky, a member of the editorial board at Third World Quarterly, defended Gilley’s entry, arguing that retracting the piece would open “dangerous doors.” Despite Chomsky’s statement, 15 of his colleagues at Third World Quarterly resigned their positions on the editorial board.
Gilley’s colleague at Portland State University, Peter Boghossian, expressed his concern over the backlash and Gilley’s decision to retract on Twitter.
