The Mexican government is increasing the financial reward offered for information leading to the capture of the leader of Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), one of the most ruthless and dangerous criminal organizations in that nation.

This week, the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) increased its reward from $2 million pesos ($100,000 USD) to $30 million pesos ($1,500,000 USD) for information leading to the capture of Ruben Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes–better known as “El Mencho.”

In recent years, CJNG grew from being an offshoot of the Sinaloa Cartel to being one of Mexico’s most dangerous organizations. As Breitbart Texas reported, authorities are increasingly worried about the cartel’s tactics which include the use of IEDs and recruiting Colombian terrorists from the FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Columbia). Most recently, CJNG escalated violence to expand into areas once controlled by the Sinaloa Cartel. The violence spread to previously peaceful areas in central Mexico, as well as famous beach resort areas like Cancun, Los Cabos, and Baja California.

In April 2015, El Mencho’s gunmen ambushed and killed 15 Mexican federal police officers and tried to go after the state attorney general, Breitbart Texas reported at the time. Soon after, authorities tried unsuccessfully to capture El Mencho, however, his gunmen shot down a military helicopter and spread chaos throughout the region to cover his escape.

In February, Breitbart Texas reported on the kidnapping of two Mexican federal agents who were tortured, forced to record a video with a message to their bosses on behalf of the cartel, and were eventually murdered. Federal authorities discovered the bodies of the kidnapped agents stuffed in the trunk of a car. They were shot in their heads, execution style.

Editor’s Note: Breitbart Texas traveled to the Mexican States of Tamaulipas, Coahuila, and Nuevo León to recruit citizen journalists willing to risk their lives and expose the cartels silencing their communities.  The writers would face certain death at the hands of the various cartels that operate in those areas including the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas if a pseudonym were not used. Breitbart Texas’ Cartel Chronicles are published in both English and in their original Spanish. This article was written by Tony Aranda from Nuevo León.
