Sequester Eve: Kerry Pledges $60 Million for Syrian Rebels
This morning, the State Department announced that Secretary of State John Kerry has committed $60 million in "non-lethal" aid to assist the Syrian rebels fighting the Assad regime. The announcement comes on the eve of automatic budget cuts across the government.
"The US will be providing an additional $60 million in non-lethal assistance to support the efforts of the Syrian opposition coalition over the coming months," Kerry said.
"We will be sending medical supplies and food to the (rebel) Supreme Military Council, so there will be direct assistance," he added.
The US has already provided $50 million to the Syrian rebels, bringing America's total commitment, so far, to $110 million.
Kerry's commitment will need Congressional approval.
