Unemployment Unchanged at 7.6%

The nationwide unemployment rate remained unchanged at 7.6% in June, the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday. The economy added an adjusted 195,000 jobs in June–a stronger-than-usual performance for the still-sluggish economy. However, the number of new jobs added was exceeded by the one million job-seekers leaving the workforce, which is 206,000 higher than those who left in June of 2012.

The labor force participation rate remained historically high at 63.5%, little changed from previous months. The leisure and hospitality industries led job creation, suggesting that Americans may have somewhat more disposable income to spend on travel and vacation than in previous years. Unemployment for women rose slightly, while for most other groups it remained unchanged, except for Asians, whose jobless rate fell.
