Yemen Defense Minister Escapes Al-Qaeda Bombing

Barack Obama says we’ve got Al-Qaeda on the run, now that Osama Bin Laden is dead.

Not so fast. Al-Qaeda is alive and well and murdering people in Yemen with impunity. A car bomb attack designed to kill Yemen’s Defense Minister slaughtered ten people on Tuesday. The Defense Minister, Mohammed Nasir Ahmad, was unharmed in the blast, which occurred near government headquarters in the Yemen’s capital, Sana’a.

At last report, five of the minister’s bodyguards were not so lucky; they were killed. It is believed that Yemen’s division of Al Qaeda was taking revenge for the killing of their second-in-command, Said al-Shehri, a Saudi national, by the army in an operation inHadramout province.

Al-Qaeda’s Yemen division has been suspected of carrying out suicide bombings as well as targeting Yemeni government officials for assassination.
