African Union Claims ICC Is 'Hunting' Africans

The BBC reports that the African Union (AU) has accused the International Criminal Court (ICC) of “hunting” Africans. The allegations came after the ICC remained steadfast in its plans to try Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta for “crimes against humanity.”

Kenyatta was elected in March and will be tried in July over allegations that he “fueled violence after disputed elections in 2007.”

Political onlookers say the charges against Kenyatta actually seem to have helped him beat “then-Prime Minister Raila Odinga … in this year’s poll” by allowing him to come across as the candidate who stayed focused on Kenya, even as outside forces railed against him.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalgn says this is a matter that should be handled by Kenyan courts, not the ICC. Moreover, he says he is concerned over the fact that of those indicted by the ICC, “99% are Africans.”

He claims ICC operations have “degenerated into some kind of race hunting.”
