Notre Dame Did Not Contact Police, NCAA When Informed About Te'o Hoax

After Manti Te’o informed Notre Dame officials that his dead girlfriend never existed on December 26 and claimed he was a victim of an “elaborate” hoax, Notre Dame officials did not contact the police or the NCAA.

Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said, on Wednesday, that the university did not inform the police and felt no need to alert the NCAA even though the university was concerned about whether someone would try to extort Te’o or was trying to influence the outcome of football games with the hoax.

“There is no factual predicate for an NCAA violation,” Swarbrick said, meaning that this was the first case in the history of the NCAA of a dead girlfriend who turned out to have never existed.
