Basket Lowered to Allow Kevin Ware to Cut Down Net

Louisville guard Kevin Ware, who inspired his team after grittily recovering from one of the most gruesome injuries in recent memory, was able to cut down the net after Louisville beat Michigan 82-76 for the national title on Monday in Ware’s hometown of Atlanta, Georgia.

Ware’s mother did not want him to even attempt to cut down the net, but the basket was lowered so Ware, whose number 5 was emblazoned on t-shirts worn by his teammates and Louisville fans, could participate in the traditional postgame ceremony.

Ware gruesomely broke his leg in the first half of Louisville’s Elite Eight victory over Duke that left his teammates and coach in shock and tears.

After a successful operation last week, Ware got clearance to travel to Atlanta, Georgia and attend the national semifinal game against Wichita State on Saturday and the title game against Michigan on Monday.
