Small ‘Daily Breeze’ Wins Pulitzer for Busting Local Corruption

Two writers and the city editor for The Daily Breeze, a 63,000-circulation newspaper in Torrance, California, won the Pulitzer Prize for Local Reprting on Monday. The writers, Rob Kuznia, Rebecca Kimitch, and the editor, Frank Suraci, won $10,000 for their reporting of corruption in the Centinela Valley Union High School District.

Fresno Unified Dropped Sex Ed, May Reinstate It

The Fresno Unified School District, the nation’s fourth-largest, with roughly 73,000 students, has no comprehensive sex education program in place after dropping an earlier, controversial program. In response, Fresno Barrios Unidos, a teen and parent health organization, and the ACLU of Northern California have expressed their desire to implement a sex education program. In December 2013 they held a gathering calling for the district to improve its sex education curriculum.

Loretta Sanchez May Announce Challenge to Kamala Harris

As Attorney General Kamala Harris has gone unchallenged in her candidacy for Barbara Boxer’s Senate seat, speculation has focused on whether a Latino candidate who could more effectively represent the needs of the state’s large Latino population would emerge to run for the office. On Monday, Rep. Loretta Sanchez will speak at a luncheon of the Democratic Foundation of Orange County, possibly announcing her candidacy, according to The Orange County Register.

Prado Dam Fire near L.A. Triggers Evacuation

On Saturday night, over 300 homes near Chino Hills by the Prado Dam had to be evacuated because of a brush fire rapidly traveling through the area. Jennifer Fuhrman, a spokeswoman for the Riverside County Fire Department, said the blaze was first reported at just after 6 p.m.

California State Senate Votes to Replace Serra Statue with Sally Ride

A largely partisan state Senate debate between Democrats and Republicans ended Monday with a decision to replace the statue of Father Junipero Serra in Washington, D.C.’s National Statuary Hall Collection with a statue of NASA astronaut Sally Ride, the first American woman in space and an acknowledged lesbian. The resolution needed 21 votes to pass; the final tally was 22-10.

Miami Marlins Pitcher’s Delivery Special

Monday night at Turner Field in Atlanta, Miami Marlins pitcher Carter Capps showed the Braves his own version of the bunny hop, in which he jumps off the rubber while delivering pitches.
