Democratic Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper says his state’s decision to legalize pot “was a bad idea” that other state’s should avoid for several years until more is known.

“If I could’ve waved a wand the day after the election, I would’ve reversed the election and said, ‘This was a bad idea,'” said Hickenlooper, who opposed the 2012 marijuana decision. “You don’t want to be the first person to do something  like this.”

Hickenlooper said other governors should “wait a couple of years” to see what all the “unintended consequences” will be from legalizing dope. Doing so, he said, would also help in navigating the maze of regulatory uncertainty.

“There’s a whole regulatory environment…that really regulates alcohol. We’re starting from scratch, and we don’t have a federal partner because [marijuana] is still illegal federally,” said Hickenlooper.

Colorado, Oregon, Alaska, and Washington have all legalized pot.
