During her press conference at the United Nations today, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton dodged questions about reports highlighting inappropriate foreign donations to the Clinton Foundation while she was in the Obama administration.
Clinton was asked about the conflict of interest by MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell, after the New York Times reported that the foundation took tens of millions in donations from countries with questionable human rights practices such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Algeria and Brunei.
“With respect to the foundation, I’m very proud of the work the foundation does,” Clinton replied, pointing out that the Clinton family had “hundreds of thousands” of donors.
Clinton ignored the suggestion of impropriety among foreign donations, pointing out that it should be obvious where the foundation stood on women’s issues.
“I think that we are very clear about where we stand, certainly where I stand, on all of these issues,” she said. “There can’t be any mistake about my passion concerning women’s rights here at home and around the world.
Former President Bill Clinton also defended donations to the foundation, during an event on Saturday.
“Do we agree with everything they do? No,” Clinton said, according to the New York Times. “You’ve got to decide when you do this work whether it will do more good than harm if someone helps you from another country,” he added.
