NRA-ILA’s Chris Cox at RNC: Donald Trump Will Save America by Protecting Second Amendment

During the second day of the Republican National Convention, the NRA-ILA’s Chris Cox explained that this election is about securing the Second Amendment by keeping Hillary Clinton away from the Supreme Court. In no uncertain terms, he made clear that her machinations include reversing District of Columbia v. Heller (2008) and  gutting the Second Amendment, yet he assured the audience that there is a sure preventative to such travesty–and that preventative is Donald Trump.

Cox said, “We live in dangerous times. We’re worried, and we have reason to be, because our government has failed to keep us safe. You have to be able to protect yourself and your family, and that’s what the Second Amendment is all about.”

He described a young mother who is home alone with her baby “when a violent predator kicks the door in.” He said a mother in such a situation will “dial 911 and pray,” but then what? “The police will do their best to get there quickly, but their average response time is 11 minutes.” What happens during those 11 minutes?

Cox said this scenario raises a question: “Should she be able to defend herself with a firearm in her own home”? He then answered in the affirmative but stressed that a variation of this same question–Should Americans be able to defend themselves with firearms in their own homes?–“is on the ballot in November.”

He explained that in the Heller decision, the Supreme Court ruled that the Second Amendment protects “a fundamental, individual right to protect ourselves and our families with a firearm in our own homes.” But the ruling was issued when Antonin Scalia was on the court, and in his absence, the 5-4 Heller decision is up for grabs. Worse yet, Hillary Clinton wants to see it reversed, and hopes for that reversal will guide her in choosing Scalia’s replacement, should she be elected to the White House.

Cox said succinctly, “A Hillary Clinton Supreme Court means your right to own a firearm is gone.”

He referenced the single mother scenario again and the millions of women who do own guns “and millions more [who] are thinking about it,” then said, “It’s not Hillary Clinton who thinks women should have that choice. It’s Donald Trump.”

Cox concluded:

Donald Trump is a life member of the National Rifle Association. So are his sons Don and Eric because we are the largest and oldest civil rights organization in America. We fight for the rights of all Americans, regardless of race, religion, or sexual orientation, because the right to protect your life is the most precious right you have.

Friends, the five million men and women of the NRA will fight without apology for your right to protect your life. But we’re on the cusp of losing this great American freedom and with it, this great nation. The only way we save it is by electing  Donald Trump the next President of the United States.
