Muslim Designer Unveils All-Hijab Collection at New York Fashion Week

A Muslim fashion designer made history this week by debuting the first fashion collection to feature traditional Muslim hijabs in every look during New York Fashion Week.

Indonesian designer Anniesa Hasibuan, 28, debuted her collection at Moynihan Station on Monday, according to CNN. The young designer reportedly received a standing ovation after the show.

“I have been doing this for a really long time and I have never seen a standing ovation at the end of a show. We all had goose bumps,” the event’s press manager, Lori Riviere, told CNN. “Anniesa was so moved she was crying backstage. It was just really emotional for her.”

Hasibuan reportedly got her start in fashion in London in March 2015, and has also shown off her work in Paris.

“I am so proud and thankful for everyone on the team who helped me so this event could happen, and I am thankful to international and local media from Indonesia for exposing my show,” the designer told CNN in a statement. “I did not realize the result can be this amazing, and I am thrilled and humbled by the welcome reaction given.”

Hasibuan told her hometown newspaper the Jakarta Post this week that she was bringing 38 ready-to-wear looks to New York Fashion Week, with ten of them being evening gowns.

“I want to bring the Indonesian name to the fashion world, and use my clothes to introduce people to the different and diverse parts of Indonesia,” the designer told the paper.
