Nimes railway station was evacuated Saturday evening and police have placed the area on lockdown after reports of a gunman, or gunmen having been seen at the terminal.

Local newspaper Midi Libre reports police evacuated the station and a witness who said there was “one or more armed individuals”, but contested whether any shots had been discharged during the incident.

The paper reports that police have arrested one individual and are hunting another. There have been no indications of injuries, nor confirmation of gunfire after the incident.

Police have instructed members of the public to avoid the area.

The incident comes as security forces across Europe and the world remain on high alert following a spate of Jihadist terror attacks. Spain suffered three consecutive attacks over the course of Thursday and Friday, which saw 14 killed by Moroccan and North African terrorists.

These attacks were followed by a mass stabbing in Finland, which police have now revealed were perpetrated by a Moroccan asylum seeker who arrived in the country in 2016.

On Saturday, another mass stabbing took place in Siberia, Russia, and was claimed by the Islamic State. The Russian security services have disputed the claim, however.
