UN powers to hold new Syria meeting

Envoys from the five permanent UN Security Council members will hold a new meeting Thursday on Syria’s alleged chemical weapons attack, diplomats said.

Diplomats from Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States will meet behind closed doors from 2:30 pm New York time (1830 GMT) to discuss a fiercely disputed British draft resolution that could allow military action against Syria.

A first meeting on the British proposal on Monday broke up without any accord on taking action over the suspected use of chemical weapons in Syria on August 21.

Britain, which along with France and the United States is considering a military strike on President Bashar al-Assad’s forces, wants a resolution that allows “all necessary measures to protect civilians.”

Russia and China, which have vetoed three resolutions that would increase pressure on Assad since the start of the conflict in March 2011, opposed the draft.
