Michael Wiesinger was on Monday named coach of Bundesliga strugglers Nuremberg as a reward for his work with the reserve team, team manager Martin Bader announced.
Wiesinger, who turns 40 on Thursday, replaces Dieter Hecking, who on Saturday became coach of fellow strugglers VfL Wolfsburg after exercising a clause in his contract allowing him to leave before his contract finished in 2014.
“Michael has done exceptional work for the past year-and-a-half with the reserve team,” said Bader.
Wiesinger, a former midfielder who played for Nuremberg for six years before leaving for Bayern Munich, said that he felt up to the challenge.
“Accepting this sporting challenge is something very special for me,” he said.
“I believe I am capable of doing the job because I know the club.”
Nuremberg are presently fifth from bottom of the table after 17 matches, eight points clear of the relegation places.
