Wind causes long delay at British Open

High winds stopped play for five hours in the third round at the Women’s British Open over the Old Course, St Andrews.

With gusts of up to 40mph, the players were taken off the course at 12:30 (1130GMT) and play was not scheduled to start again until 17:30 at the earliest.

South Korea’s Choi Na Yeon, one ahead of the field overnight on ten under par, is now facing the prospect of having to split her third round between two days.

Eleven players managed to finish their rounds before the wind reached its peak and American Cristie Kerr and New Zealand amateur Lydia Ko posted the best scores of 75. They are both on four over par.

Twenty-six groups started and the only player who managed to keep a bogey off her card was the history-chasing Park Inbee.

The South Korean is aiming to become the first golfer to win four majors in one calendar year and she began the final round eight shots behind Choi.

She squeezed in four holes before the suspension – and picked up a birdie at the third to move to three under par.
