Last month’s attack on the US consulate in the Libyan city of Benghazi was unprecedented in “recent diplomatic history” and there had been no prior intelligence to raise the alarm, top US officials said Tuesday.
“There was no actionable intelligence of any planned or imminent attack,” a top State Department official said, giving a detailed timeline of the massive armed assault on the compound and a nearby annex, ahead of Wednesday’s congressional hearing into alleged security failures.
