The Dow Jones industrial average edged higher to close at another record Thursday. The gains were modest, though, a day after the index surged the most in more than two months. Stocks climbed Wednesday after the Federal Reserve said it was trimming its stimulus efforts as the economy improved.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 11.11 points, or 0.1 percent, to 16,179.08.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell 1.05 points, or 0.1 percent, to 1,809.60.

The Nasdaq composite dropped 11.93, or 0.3 percent, to 4,058.13.

For the week so far:

The Dow is up 423.72 points, or 2.7 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 34.28 points, or 1.9 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 57.16 points, or 1.4 percent.

For the year so far:

The Dow is up 3,074.94 points, or 23.5 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 383.41 points, or 26.9 percent.

The Nasdaq is up 1,038.62 points, or 34.4 percent.
