MCALLEN, Texas — An illegal alien from Mexico will spend seven years in prison for assaulting a U.S. Border Patrol agent in the Texas border city of Laredo.

During a recent court hearing, U.S. District judge Marina Garcia Marmolejo sentenced 23-year-old Jose Luis Zavala to seven years in prison on four counts of assaulting a federal agent and human smuggling, information released to Breitbart Texas by the U.S. Attorney’s office revealed.

A jury convicted Zavala in June 2014 after hearing evidence on the October 2013 incident where he charged at a Border Patrol agent and ordered a group of immigrants to help in the attack.

As Breitbart Texas had previously reported, the city of Laredo has a series of storm drains and tunnels that are used by human smugglers to hide from authorities. On the day of the assault, an agent tried to apprehend Zavala and the group he was leading when Zavala approached him with his hands up claiming to surrender. Zavala then charged at the agent tackling him while ordering the group to “Todos Peguenle” or “everyone hit him.” Zavala was able to rip the agent’s Taser away and the group reached for his gun. The agent managed to secure the gun and fire two shots as other agents arrived to help.
