HOUSTON, Texas – A Texas homeowner likely saved his own life after he engaged in a gun battle with two armed robbers.

Two would-be robbers approached a man as he got out of his car at his home in northwest Harris County. The men were displaying guns as they approached him. At some point during the robbery attempt, the homeowner was shot in the back, according to KTRK ABC13.

Unbeknownst to the robbers, the homeowner was also armed. He pulled his weapon and began firing at the suspects–a move that likely saved his life.

Deputies with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office told ABC13 they believe at least one of the suspected robbers may have been shot during the exchange of gunfire. The suspects fled the scene after the homeowner began returning fire. They have not yet be captured.

Deputies conducted an extensive search of the area including the backyards of neighbors’ homes.

Local hospitals are being monitored by police to determine if anyone has checked in with gunshot wounds.

Deputies told Click2Houston NBC2 reporters they did not know if this was an attempt to carjack the homeowner’s pickup truck or if it was an attempted home invasion robbery.

Emergency medical services rushed the homeowner to a hospital. He is expected to recover from his injuries.

Texas law allows a person to use deadly force in their home or car if they believe they are in danger of death or serious bodily injury. Local news outlets did not report if the homeowner has a Texas License to Carry.

No description of the suspects was reported by Houston local news media outlets. There were also no reports of vehicles that may have been associated with the would-be robbers.
