An open borders organization in the San Jose, California region has set up a “Know Your Rights” campaign for illegal immigrants who face being deported under the forthcoming Trump Administration.
The Services, Immigrant Rights and Education Network, known as SIREN is partnering with grocery stores in California that service mainly minority communities, asking that illegal immigrants be shielded from federal immigration laws under Trump.
“Everybody has basic rights, whether you’re documented or undocumented,” Maricela Gutierrez, SIREN’s executive director, told the Mercury News.
SIREN promotes a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants and demands they be eligible for social services, such as free healthcare.
The grocery store chain that SIREN is working with is Mi Pueblo, which reaffirmed its stance of promoting the protection of illegal immigrants, in a statement to Mercury News.
“We are always looking for ways to provide value to members, beyond traditional grocery services,” Mi Pueblo said. “We know that immigration is a hot topic in our neighborhoods and that’s why we have partnered with SIREN to offer clinics where experts will provide attendees with information on immigration rights, as well as hand out brochures and other material that can better inform our customers.”
Likewise, the San Jose area’s branch of the Council for American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is beginning a similar campaign to the “Know Your Rights” initiative.
CAIR Executive Director Zahra Billoo told the Mercury News they will teach Muslims how to combat alleged bullying in schools and protect themselves legally if Trump does reinstate the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System (NSEERS), which tracks foreign nationals living in the country from terrorist-compromised regions of the world.
“There are a lot of unknowns,” said Billoo. “But we want to make sure people have at least a baseline knowledge of their rights so that if worse comes to worse, they are not unprepared.”
