On Wednesday an Indianapolis mother opened fire and killed a home invasion suspect as he tried to enter her apartment in broad daylight.

Fox 59 reports that the “mother and kids were not hurt” in the incident.

According to police, the mother heard someone trying to get into the apartment then came to face-to-fact with 19-year-old Michael Hawkins. At that point she opened fire and Hawkins “died inside the doorway.”

Neighbor Julius Radcliff said, “I hate to see that it happened, but that’s what happens when you go into people’s home trying to take their stuff.” Another neighbor, Janice Taylor, said, “You have to defend yourself. We have laws for that.”

Indianapolis police officer Aaron Hunter echoed the neighbors’ sentiment, saying, “It is disheartening that we see burglaries resulting in death, but we live in Indiana and it’s legal for people to have guns to protect themselves.”

One of the neighbor’s reported seeing another individual flee on foot when shots rang out and a third individual drove away in a car. Police have not said whether those individuals are being sought as suspects.
