Mexican authorities have deployed scores of troops to a rural area between the Mexican States of Michoacán and Jalisco after a Friday morning firefight killed at least 42 gunmen and one police officer.

The intense fighting left behind bodies around the area known as Rancho el Sol, about two miles from the highway that connects Mexico City to the cities of Morelia and Guadalajara, Mexico’s Sinembargo.mx reported.

According to preliminary information, the gunmen had 42 assault rifles, a rocket launcher, a .50 caliber Barret rifle and a handgun.

The shootout began when Mexican federal authorities tried to serve a warrant for the arrest of a drug trafficking cartel known as Los Guerreros and led by Adrian Alonso Guerrero Covarrubias and Heraclio Guerrero Martinez. The two had been linked to the murder of Enrique Hernandez, a local mayoral candidate, Sinembargo.mx reported.

Other news outlets in Mexico have reported that the shootout was carried out by members of the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion. As Breitbart Texas previously reported, the group has been behind a series of brazen attacks against Mexican authorities.
