Social justice warriors at Tufts University are now demanding illegal immigrant students on campus be shielded from federal immigration laws through a sanctuary campus policy.

The student activist organization known as “Tufts United for Immigrant Justice” is heading up calls to university officers, asking that illegal immigrants not be subject to any new policies expected in President-Elect Donald Trump’s administration.

“Our largest hopes for the administration are that they do everything they legally can to put themselves in between [the Federal Office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement] and undocumented community members,” board member of the social justice group Emma Kahn told Scout Somerville.

“We are actively working with them to talk about hiring new legal help and implementing programs to protect undocumented students from authorities, as much as possible,” Kahn continued.

Tufts University officials are walking a fine-line between adopting the “sanctuary” label and making sure that federal immigration agents are able to investigate criminal activity when the accused is an illegal immigrant.

Tufts University President Anthony Monaco has signed a letter, along with other university officials across the country, demanding that President Obama’s pro-amnesty Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) be continued in a Trump Administration.

“Tufts was founded as an institution that welcomes and values students from every walk of life,” Monaco told Scout Somerville. ”And we have a moral responsibility to safeguard the wellbeing of every member of our community. We will not waiver from those core values.”

The “immigrant justice” group is demanding the university be specifically deemed a sanctuary campus because it is “the symbolic articulation of standing with undocumented students in the face of increased structural violence.”

Of the 10,700 students enrolled at Tufts University, roughly 30 percent have signed a petition asking that the campus take up sanctuary status, with many signatures from faculty and professors at the private institution.
